چکیده

Abstract Silica-scaled chrysophytes are a unique group of protists representing major component numerous aquatic habitats where they can significantly contribute to human well-being in many ways. In the present review, altogether 14 ecosystem services provided by silica-scaled were identified highlighting their importance and roles ecosystems. The most important supporting related primary production, nutrient- biogeochemical cycling, as well sediment formation. Additionally, involved regulation climate, maintenance air quality, biological control water purification processes (as regulating services). relevant provisioning include usefulness environmental monitoring (paleolimnology, ecological status assessment climate modelling), production biochemicals provision genetic resources. Cultural associated with aesthetic values, inspiration source knowledge system well. Although one least studied groups algae, here shown provide benefits have further powerful opportunities for humans, thus detailed research future is emphasised an key well-being.

Silica-scaled chrysophytes during spring in the Kis-Balaton Reservoir, Hungary

As a result of taking water samples in spring 1999, 26 species of silica-scaled chry sophytes were found in the Kis-Balaton Reservoir I, one of the most remarkable aquatic habitats in Hungary. From them, 23 have been identified with certainity, two were ques tionable and two were identified to genus level. 12 species are new to Hungary and 19 spe cies had not been found in Kis-Balaton before...

Biodiversity and biogeographical implications of silica-scaled chrysophytes (Chrysophyceae and Synurophyceae) of the northeast wetlands of Argentina

Wetlands and water bodies in the Parana Delta River and Ibera System of northeast Argentina were studied for scaled chrysophytes. The Delta region of the Parana River is composed of a series of braided channels, streams and lagoons that extend over 17,500km2. Although the Delta is situated in the temperate zone, it experiences a more subtropical climate. The water ways of the Ibera System consi...

An inventory of scaled chrysophytes from North Carolina, USA, and their relationships to environmental variables

The distributions of silica-scaled chrysophytes in 27 freshwater ponds from three primary regions located along the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North Carolina, USA, relative to chemical gradients are described. Phytoplankton, periphyton, and surface sediments from each of the 27 sites were collected in May and June of 2001 and later analyzed extensively with both scanning electron microscopy (SEM...

Biogeographic patterns in scaled chrysophytes from the east coast of North America

1. We assessed the distribution of scaled chrysophytes in fresh waters along 3200 km of the east coast of North America (29 to 48 N) to determine any biogeographic patterns in relation to chemical, physical, climatic and spatial variables. 2. Scaled chrysophytes were identified using scanning electron microscopy and counted from 264 waterbodies in nine regions (20 subregions). Eighteen chemical...

Riverine contribution of biogenic silica to the oceanic silica budget

Biological uptake of dissolved silicate (DSi) and formation of biogenic silica (BSi) during diatom growth modifies the form of Si carried from the continents to the world ocean. Significant concentrations of BSi, averaging 28.0 pmol L-l, are found in all sizes of rivers. The global contribution of BSi carried by rivers was estimated as 1.05 ? 0.20 Tmol Si year’. Combined with the global mean ri...
